small stone 11.13.2013

behind the minivan
in motion, whoosh!
light, sparkly snowflakes
trail and disperse
like fairy dust
in the sunshine and icy breeze
 --
rooftop residual.

small stone 10.23.2013

frost on the rooftop
below freezing on the dark morning walk --
the geranium is still blooming.

small stone 9.24.2013

two great blue herons
took off suddenly
from the water below
one flew up high to the west, and swiftly,
the other stayed lower
and flew off at a slower pace
in the other direction.

both were beautiful.

small stone 7.21.2013

the car drives fast, past thick lines and curves of blue cornflowers
and bright yellow lady slippers and Queen Anne's lace -- intermingled.
ubiquitous lush green and granite against a backdrop of blue, blue sky.

this is the beauty of July --
and it goes by far too quickly.

small stone 7.15.2013

fireflies sparkle low the dusk sky
there, there and there,
lighting the backdrop of delicate Queen Anne's lace
and tall grasses on the roadside --

summer is half over.

small stone 7.9.2013

old woman
in red
slightly bent over
tends to her small patch
of community garden
at dusk
-- alone in an expanse of green.

a great blue heron
flaps by, overhead.

[Saw this from Route 81 heading north from Binghamton to Cortland, past Otsiningo Park on my right.]

small stone 6.29.2013

red-tailed hawk
sits still atop the drive-in movie screen
surveying the wide expanse
in the steady rain
as I speed by
on the road
below

small stone 6.6.13

ivy geranium hanging
in the breeze on the front porch at dawn.
hot pink blossoms do the twist.

small stone 2.10.2013

white diamond snow sparkles in sunlight --
rosy finches flit and flutter at the feeder
while cat behind the glass chatters and chirps

small stones 1.31.2013

tall trees gently wave arms high in the air,
swaying back and forth in unison --
while growling gusts of wind
furiously flap the flag on the pole.

 ------

heavy winds:
blades of the turbine spin so fast
they can't be seen.

 ------

geese in the air
fight to stay on course
like drunks walking the line.

 ------

baby swing on the tree branch
flies back and forth --
empty but for the wind.

[Today is the last day of the January 2013 Mindful Writing Challenge. I have enjoyed the experience of this practice each day this month. Today's finale was a windy one, for sure... and it wasn't enough to just write one small stone. These are all things seen on my drive to and from my son's school this morning for drop-off. Thanks to Satya and Kaspa for the inspiration. I plan to try to keep this awareness and practice going.]

small stone 1.30.2013

night on bald mountain
in the middle of the day
gets my heart beating
faster, faster, faster,
until everything slows down,
again,
and my eyes fill.

a single flute sings
and recedes
into the quiet.

small stones 1.29.2013

fog
cloaks the entire airport landing field
not even the bright orange windsock
shows its color.

--------------------

fog
shrouds the FedEx drop.
I know it is there
even though
I can't see it.

small stone 1.28.2013

black and white
winter dissonance,
sight and sound --
silent, quickly falling snow
against the slow scrape of the shovel
in foreground
and slow scrape
of the plow, beyond.

small stone 1.27.2013

cold window glass
chills my fingertips --
I snap the cell phone photo
of the snow frosted tree
and xcountry tracks
in the back yard.

small stone 1.26.2013

heavy, tingling eyelids
in the early morning
are somehow buoyed
by the awakening
aroma and taste
of delicious, steaming
Colombian brew.

small stone 1.25.2013

i've lost what day it is
and my brain is listening
when i tell it to wait a minute
to think about the day's tasks ahead.

what a nice way to wake up!

small stone 1.24.2013

four black birds sit high on a wire
over four lanes of traffic
on a minus nine degree morning.
each car below
sports a full plume of frozen exhaust.

[Note: Here in the U.S., we tend to use Farenheit for temperature measures . . . -9 Farenheit degrees = -23 degrees Celcius. Either way, it is darn cold!]

small stone 1.23.2013

the garbage truck banner declares:
"IN GOD WE TRUST."
faith in the face of refuse.

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

small stone 1.22.2013

stillness --
in the dark of night at 6 a.m.
no snow falls against the
glow of the street lantern,
but cast below, a charcoal shadow
of a large fallen maple stretches
across the immaculate
blanket of white.
